KINGS A HOCKEY (Mixed)

NEW TEAM FORMATION FOR 2023-2024 SEASON

Hockey Winnipeg’s U11 (9/10-year-old), U13 (11/12-year-old), U15 (13/14-year-old) and U18 (15/16/17-year-old) teams play in a city-wide division during the regular season and the City Playoffs.

Teams are divided into levels so players have an opportunity to play at a skill level where they can fully participate.

Last season, the levels were:

A1

A2

A3

This is the first change to team formation since the double age groupings were established several seasons ago.

It was decided that team formation needed to be reviewed as having fewer levels at the early ages (U11 & U13) placed some players in situations where teams were competing at a disadvantage as player skill levels was so wide from player to player.  It was also difficult for larger associations to create equally skilled teams at the same level due to gaps in skill levels.

By establishing more skill levels, teams will be more competitive, and skill balanced.

The new levels for 2023-2024 season are:

U11

A1A

A1B

The number of registered players within the SWHA boundaries and the minimum/maximum roster size determines the number of teams formed each year.  The number of teams is then used to determine the level that SWHA will host.  All teams play under the name “South Winnipeg Kings”.

In recent years SWHA has combined U15 & U18 tryouts and team formation with the Fort Garry North Hockey Association (FGNHA) provide access to all levels of play.

Try-outs, conducted by a third party, are held each year to place players onto appropriate teams based on rankings.  Players are evaluated as skaters or goaltenders, but not both, based on the position selected during the registration process.

Throughout the season, U11 & U13 South Winnipeg Kings players receive player development skates with Vigier Hockey.  The development skates typically occur every two weeks and are on Thursday nights at St. Norbert Arena.

Preseason Ice (U11)

U11 players will have 6 hour of preseason ice included in the registration cost.   Please click here for more information on the U11 Program.

Preseason Ice (ages 13+)

Players ages 13-17 have 2 hour of preseason ice included in the registration cost.  September is a busy hockey month.  13–17-year-old players are often involved in AA, AAA and High School tryouts that conflict with the preseason skate schedule.  Due to all the inevitable schedule conflicts, SWHA limits our preseason schedule, but we recommend all players supplement this 2 skates with additional hockey conditioning prior to tryouts.

SWHA preseason ice (2 skates) is open to all *registered players, including players involved in the AA/AAA/High School tryouts.

*Note:  Participants must be registered online with SWHA prior to attending preseason skates or tryouts.

*Note:  High School hockey is a separate program in Winnipeg.  Players who wish to attend preseason skates or AAA, AA, A1 or A2 tryouts must register through SWHA first to be eligible to attend.  See AAA and High School Information for details.

U11, U13, U15 and U18 Game Schedules and Standings are available on the Hockey Winnipeg website.
